Project Summary:

Launched in 1992, SGP supports activities of non-governmental and community-based organizations in developing countries towards climate change abatement, conservation of biodiversity, protection of international waters, reduction of the impact of persistent organic pollutants and prevention of land degradation while generating sustainable livelihoods.

Objectives:

The main objectives of the Small Grants Programme are to:

• Develop community-level strategies and implement technologies that could reduce threats to the global environment if they are replicated over time;
• Gather lessons from community-level experience and initiate the sharing of successful community-level strategies and innovations among CSOs and NGOs, host governments, development aid agencies, GEF and others working on a regional or global scale;
• Build partnerships and networks of stakeholders to support and strengthen community, NGO and national capacities to address global environmental problems and promote sustainable development;
• Ensure that conservation and sustainable development strategies and projects that protect the global environment are understood and practiced by communities and other key stakeholders.

• Promoting Social Inclusion (Grant-makers+);
• Global Reach for Citizen Practice-Based Knowledge program (Grant-makers+).

Accomplishments:

• 26 projects are successfully completed and 12 projects are under execution;
• 1,557,564 USD represents the co-financing, including the in-kind co-financing amounting 549,260 USD;
• 7,830 hectares of globally significant biodiversity area are protected or sustainably managed within the implemented projects;
• 198.57 tonnes of CO₂ are decreased or avoided by energy efficient and renewable energy technologies introduced within SGP projects;
• 14 NGOs are formed and instructed;
• 240,068 people benefit from the implemented projects within SGP programme;
• 27,490 women participated/got involved in SGP projects;
• 71 households and 9 social objects benefit from renewable energy technologies.
